South Dakota changed its voter registration laws in 2026. There are more hoops to jump through - but you can still vote. This page will walk you through it.

New in 2026 (SB 175): South Dakota now requires proof of U.S. citizenship to register as a full-ballot voter. This applies to anyone registering for the first time. If you're already registered at your home address, you don't need to do anything — if you're unsure - confirm your status using the link below.

NEW Registration Guidelines

Voter Registration Guidance (SB 175: Effective March 26, 2026)

Applies to individuals who are not currently registered to vote in South Dakota

Proof of Citizenship Requirements: To be registered as a “full-ballot voter,” an applicant must provide proof of U.S. citizenship at the time of registration.

Option 1: In-person presentation (original document required):

The applicant must in person show an original (not a copy) of one of the following IDs to the county auditor:

  • South Dakota driver license or nondriver ID issued after July 1, 2025
  • Driver license or nondriver ID from another state indicating citizenship has been verified
  • Tribal identification card

Option 2: Submission with application (photocopy acceptable):

A copy of one of the following must accompany the application:

  • Birth certificate
  • United States passport
  • Consular Report of Birth Abroad (U.S. Department of State)
  • Certificate of naturalization
  • Any documentation permitted under 42 C.F.R. 436.407

If Proof of Citizenship Is Not Provided, The applicant will be registered as a federal-only voter.

The applicant must provide acceptable documentation to the county auditor before the election to receive a full ballot

2026 Election Information

NEW in 2026 (Senate Bill 175): South Dakota now requires proof of U.S. citizenship to register as a “full-ballot voter.” This applies to anyone registering for the FIRST TIME or RE-REGISTERING. If you’re already registered – at your current address AND in your current name – you’re not affected. Double-check your status below.

PRIMARY DEADLINES:

Voter Registration Deadline: May 18, 2026

Absentee Voting Begins: April 17, 2026

Primary Election Date: June 2, 2026

MIDTERM DEADLINES

Voter Registration Deadline: October 19, 2026

Absentee Voting Begins: September 18, 2026

General Election Date: November 3, 2026

On Election Day you must vote at your assigned precinct. Some polling locations may change; make sure to check your polling location before heading to the polls on November 3rd! Stay hydrated and bring a snack.
