If you ran into a problem voting in Sioux Falls — ballot shortages, absentee or mail delays, registration issues, or anything else — here is where you can report it.

How to Report a Voting Issue 

Who to call, what to say, and what happens next.

1. Minnehaha County Auditor

The local office responsible for ballot supply and precinct operations. Your best first stop for putting a specific incident on record.

What to say:

  • Your name and voter registration status 
  • The precinct name/number, plus the date and time
  • What happened – in your own words
  • Ask them to log it as an incident report
  • Ask for a reference number or written confirmation

2. SD Secretary of State — Elections / HAVA Office

Same office handles general questions and formal Help America Vote Act (HAVA) complaints

Hours: 8am–5pm Central, Monday–Friday (closed holidays)

Informal Option: call with questions or to flag what happened.

Formal Option:

  • file a written HAVA complaint under Section 402.
  • It must be signed AND notarized, then mailed to the address above.
  • The State Board of Elections must resolve it within 90 days (SDCL 12-1-21).
  • If they miss that deadline, you can ask a circuit court to appoint an independent arbitrator, who then has 60 days to resolve it (SDCL 12-1-22).

3. ACLU of South Dakota

Independent civil rights organization actively collecting voter accounts as part of a public records request

Filing a report won’t get a missed vote counted after the fact — but it creates a record.

The more people who report – the harder this is to normalize.
